Research

Helsinki region is the capital region of Finland with 1.2 million inhabitants, and an attractive base of biosciences with 9 universities, 6 polytechnics and several research centers.

The strongholds of the bioscience and medical research in the region are:

  • Neurological diseases and brain research
  • Cancer research
  • Molecular medicine
  • Diagnostics
  • Stem cells and cell therapy
  • Bioinformatics

Centres of Excellence (Academy of Finland) are research communities at the international cutting edge of research in their fields. Many of them focusing on bioresearch are located in Helsinki Region.

Science Campuses in Helsinki Region

Helsinki Region provides excellent research environment and cooperation network for scientists and companies as well as facilities and services for start-up companies in the close vicinity of strong basic research. The Helsinki Region hosts four campuses relevant to life sciences.

Meilahti Medical Campus hosts medical teaching and biomedical and clinical research activities of the University of Helsinki, the University of Helsinki Central Hospital, and several other research organizations e.g. Folkhälsan, Minerva Research Institute and HUCH Institute. The latest reinforcement for Meilahti Campus is the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) which is part of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine with the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).

Viikki Life Science Campus is a remarkable center of biosciences, even by European standards. In addition to biosciences, the campus carries also a wide range of research in the areas of environmental and veterinary sciences, food technology and economics. The research within health-related bioscience is concentrated in the Helsinki University Faculties of Biosciences and Pharmacy and the Institute of Biotechnology, as well as in the research organizations such as Neuroscience Center and the Viikki Centre for Drug Research (DDTC).

Kumpula Science Campus houses the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, Computer Science as well as Geosciences and Geography of the Faculty of Science of the University of Helsinki.

Otaniemi Campus within the Aalto University School of Science and Technology is based in Otaniemi in Espoo. Otaniemi has the highest concentration of high technology in the Nordic countries. A unique combination of education, study and business is densely packed into this small area. Otaniemi has twice been chosen as one of the most innovative areas in Europe, and it has also been awarded the EU Award of Excellence.

More about research in Finland:

Biocentrum Helsinki is a large umbrella organization at the University of Helsinki, with some 600 people engaged in research in molecular biology, molecular medicine and biotechnology. The 28 member groups have been selected by international experts strictly on the basis of their scientific accomplishments. They are located on the Campuses of Meilahti and Viikki. Biocentrum Helsinki is a member of Biocenter Finland, a network promoting research, development and collaboration between all major Biocenters in Finland.
